Accident with a Boar
Not the case I'm most prood of, but it's also part of history. Even after number of thoughts I don't think I could have done any better in that situation.
Road outside the city limit. 2 AM at night. Considering the fact that there are a lot a wildlife around - I was going just 70 kmh (theoretics could say they'd drive 20 kmh outsite city limits, but would they really?).
Still wasn't slow enough to bring car to a full stop. At time of hit the speed is aprx 10-20 kmh (gps speed tracking has a bit of latency).
I saw that little fella once he ran out of forest, right before he ran on the road. But it takes time to move your foot from acceleration to the break and car to start reacting on those. Don't believe in superstories that everything happens momentarily. In reallife it takes a 0.5-1 second and time is precious in those moments.
Boar slided into the bushes (I guess he surely didn't get the best experience of his life that day). Small crack of plastic bumper and clip that holds the antifog light (though that minor damage to car makes me hope it wasn't too bad for that fella as well).
Swearing in background is not of my mouth but of my emotional passengers :) I kept silent and focused on situation once I saw that boar appearing out of forest.
Some were asking me why I didn't swing around - I had enough (~1 sec) reaction time on that. And that's true - I could have done that technically and I was cool enough to make that move. But Road Rules are prescribing to slow down in such situation right in your lane for a reason, you know: curvy road. There easily could have been the car on opposite site of the road around the corner. Or some car overtaking me (I didn't have enought time to check the mirrors) and last but not least swinging the car at the time of breaking traction is a straight way to hit the curb of the road. This way I could have saved the damage to poor boar by cost of 5 people in my car and potentially others if they'd have been on road. So all I did was hittin the break pedal to the ground and it was a conscios decision. If that would have been a kid - I think I'd try to swing around no matter what. But probably I was a bit cynical and weighted my chances in that second this way.
Doing afterthoughts for number of hours later it's now easier to think back and forth and what if I could turn the wheel, released the breaks caught the car from falling out of road... what--if-what-if... in that moment I had just literally 1 sec to analyze and react.
But give me your thoughts.
