Slow Motion Airgun Pigeon Hunting #16
'Mission Pigeon Pie'
At a farm where I control the rabbit population, the farmer has also been having a lot of trouble with the pigeons. Not only are they destroying the crops, they also frequent his garden, eating the plants buds and pooing everywhere. They're a pest and he wants them gone, so of course I've agreed to thin them out about and take a bit of pigeon breast for my freezer (as the pic at the end shows).
Shots were taken from 20-50yards - the garden is raised and I'm able to stand in a low are with my chest level to the ground behind a bush. This trip was shot in the evening when they come in to roost in the farmers trees. With my camo on they have no idea I'm there (especially a camo hat - they do fly after all and so you need to be concealed from above). There was little wind at all that evening, making longer shots a much safer bet, so there's not much to say with regards aimpoints - for most kills I aimed bang on the crosshairs.
Head shot or heart? Well.. both will do the job. I think there's a time when either is the better choice. I usually prefer to shoot in the head, which with pigeon is a very small target, but for this particular trip, there was pretty much zero wind, and I was confident I could hit the mark so head shots it was.
Equipment used: Air Arms S410 C .177 (Sub 12ft lbs) Gary Cane custom stock, MTC Mamba 4-16x50, Casio EX-ZR100 on home made mount, MTC 5-700 Laser Range finder, Harris Swivel Bi pod, Pellets: .177 JSB Exacts 4.53
