The Ghazal’s writer is Hakim Momin Khan Momin (1800-1851) who was an Urdu poet par excellence in Delhi. The English translation does not capture the many layers of meaning in the verse. Many have been trying to interpret the meanings of these lines above.

Wahi Yaani Vaada, Nibah Ka
(That promise to preserve our relationship)

(I wonder if you remember it or you don't)

Wo jo hum mein tum mein qaraar tha
(The pledge that once was, between us)
Tumhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
(May be you remember it or may be not)

Woh naye gile wo shiqayate
(Those new objections and complaints)
Wo maze-maze ki hiqayate
(Those delightful tales to entertain ourselves)
Woh har ek baat pe roothna
(You were getting offended without refrain)
Tumhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho
(I don't know if you remember them at all, may be you don't)

Woh jo hum mein tum mein qaraar tha
(Whatever little there was left between us)

Koi baat aisi agar hui

Jo tumhare jee ko buri lagi
