Futuristic visions of hypersonic jet travel may not be a reality quite yet, but it is the focus of several research teams around the world. Dr Derek Muller meets one of these pioneering research teams at the University of Queensland, Australia. The team are working on SCRAMSPACE, a 1.8m-long scramjet designed to operate at eight times the speed of sound, and a step nearer to developing super-high-speed transport to be used in space projects and the civil aerospace sector. We may have to wait a while for round-the-world journeys in under two hours, but with rocket science innovation like this, it may be in the pipeline.
