Eastern Painted Turtle Laying Eggs

On this episode of Animal World Experience, we watch a female Eastern Painted Turtle laying eggs in my backyard! Every late May through early June, female Eastern Painted Turtles leave the water in search of the nearest suitable area to dig their nests and lay their eggs. These turtles sometimes dig several test holes before finding just the right spot. A great spot is in a sunny location, with a mixture of rotting vegetation and sand in the soil which increases the heat and humidity in the nest. It takes the perfect combination of heat and humidity in the nest to incubate the eggs, and the temperature in the turtle nest will also determine if the turtles are male or female!
Watch closely as our female Eastern Painted Turtle lays her final egg, fills in the hole, pats it down, then camouflages the nest!
