The Stack Deep Ellum
Award Category:
Best Office/Parking Architectural/Structural
Project Description:
The Stack is a cutting-edge Class AA office building located in Dallas’ historic and thriving Deep Ellum neighborhood. The 16- story building’s upper 7 levels include flexible office space with extensive building amenities such as a 10th-floor amenity terrace, unobstructed views of downtown Dallas, private tenant balconies, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, a tenant lounge, and conferencing space, 24/7 on-site security, and fully covered parking.
Level 1 includes 15,000 SF of street-level retail space, and the building’s structured parking is located at Levels 2 through 9. The building’s lower volume blends with Deep Ellum’s historic neighborhood and shows respect for the neighborhood’s history of brick and mortar architecture, while the upper volume aesthetically expresses the goal of creating an innovative office model for the future with its modern aesthetic and visual prioritization of outdoor amenity spaces for the building’s occupants. Precast concrete was chosen to meet the aesthetic, constructability, and budget goals for the lower volume’s brick façade.
Key design features:
To suit special design conditions, some of the panels were 16 feet wide x 25 feet long and weighed slightly over 31,000 lbs, which was challenging to ship but the precaster succeeded.
The complicated arched window, features, and detailed cornice work are noteworthy craftsmanship by the precaster.
Innovations or Accomplishments Using Precast:
Precast concrete was chosen to meet the aesthetic, constructability, and budget goals for the lower volume’s brick façade. The architectural panels that make up these lower 10 levels use three unique and different colors of brick on the north elevation along with three differing window patterns to give the impression of three different buildings on this façade.
Ornate Cornice Work and three unique and different colors of brick were used on the north elevation along with three differing window patterns to give the impression of three different buildings on this façade.
Precast Concrete Components:
In all, Gate Precast Company provided 265 pieces of architectural precast that were used to give this building its unique look. The complicated arched windows, ornate cornice work, and detailed features which are striking and reflective of craftsman-style architecture, were only achieved through utilizing the dynamic and innovative nature of precast concrete.
The ground level (retail) is handset brick. The precast façade begins at Level 2 through level 10. The long elevation in the back is cast grey and painted once installed.
