Lindy Hop Class Recap: Groovy triple step alternatives
Andy & Mia taught an alternative style to triple steps. I find it help to think about striking with the ball of the foot just before the beat to free the sliding foot and to allow the heel of the stepping foot to strike the ground on the beat. Another tip is that you really need fast shoes / fast floors for this to work. Also unlike much of lindy hop you are sending your shoulder (not your hip) over the weight bearing foot and allow the body to work a bit like a pendulum. Mia has a particularly groovy styling using a heel grind / foot fan. Andy taught a rock step alternative allow the free foot to come up on 1 making the rock step more of a replace step. Andy also taught a rock step variation with a rhythm uh 1 uh 2 (L-heel R-heel L-toe R-toe) and as a variation on this you could add little foot fans to the heel steps. As a variation on your basic you can wrap into your own arm on 3 & 4. They demonstrate in the context of open basics and swingouts. Andy does a nice little trick on the swingout allowing to really emphasize the 6 in his movement: instead of stepping down the line on 5 like usual, he allows 4 to be the furthest step down the line and completes the lead of the swingout with his arms' follow through and then steps back toward home base with 5.
