A origem do canário belga é, obviamente, a Bélgica. No entanto, apenas a linhagem a que ele pertence é que veio de lá, pois os antepassados dos exemplares dessa e de outras variedades têm raízes nas ilhas Canárias, um arquipélago do Atlântico junto ao continente africano. Os canários-do-reino, por exemplo, são da mesma espécie do belga, mas ganharam essa denominação por que as aves costumavam chegar ao Brasil vindas do ‘reino’ de Portugal. Já o canário-da-terra, sim, faz parte de uma outra espécie, nativa do Brasil.

Pertencente à família dos Fringilídeos, o canário-belga mede entre 14 e 15 centímetros da ponta do bico à extremidade da cauda. A cabeça é pequena e estreita, as pernas longas, o peito arredondado e cheio. A plumagem é compacta e lisa, sem frisos. Como é um animal de origem estrangeira, a criação não precisa de autorização do Ibama – Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Renováveis.

Existem mais de 400 cores de canários reconhecidas no mundo. Mas é a amarela, da linhagem belga, a mais popular por aqui. A busca por novas e diferentes tonalidades e combinações é um dos principais objetivos de boa parte dos criadores, que também se interessam pela definição do porte do pássaro. Apresentação em exposições e melhoramento genético da raça são outras finalidades da criação comercial do canário, que ainda desperta a atenção pelo seu belo canto.

The origin of the Belgian canary is, of course, Belgium. There are over 400 recognized canary colors in the world. But it's the yellow one, from the Belgian lineage, the most popular around here. The search for new and different shades and combinations is one of the main goals of most breeders, who are also interested in defining the size of the bird. Presentation in exhibitions and genetic improvement of the breed are other purposes of commercial breeding of the canary, which still attracts attention for its beautiful song.
