Helmeted Hornbill Sounds & Calls

The sounds of a Helmeted Hornbill calling in Borneo. The spectacular call of the Helmeted Hornbill is sadly a disappearing sound in South-east Asia's rainforests. The typical call of this species is a long series of accelerating ‘toop’ sounds which build up over a few minutes and climax with a maniacal cackling laugh.

The Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil) is a very large species of hornbill found in southern Thailand & Myanmar, Peninsula Malaysia, Borneo & Sumatra. Helmeted Hornbills can grow up to to 1.7 metres in length (including the 50cm long tail) and have a bizarre leathery, wrinkled face with a hard bony casque on top of the bill.

Sadly, the Helmeted Hornbill is now considered critically endangered, mainly due to poaching for its casque. Habitat loss is also a major issue affecting this species as it relies on very old, large trees with hollows for nesting.

I recorded the Helemeted Horbill calls in this video spectrogram in Sabah, Borneo. This sample is an excerpt from track 5 of the album "Heart of Borneo - Tawau Hills"https://wildambience.com/albums/heart-of-borneo-tawau-hills/
