President Michael D. Higgins - Europe and Africa: Towards a New Relationship

In his address to the IIEA, President Michael D. Higgins reflects on the toll the pandemic has taken on our communities, economies and societies. He discusses the nature of the coronavirus as a global problem, which requires a global response. In particular, President Higgins argues that this crisis represents an unprecedented opportunity for the global community, as an exercise in multilateralism, to forge a new approach in its relationship with Africa.

About the Speaker:
Michael D. Higgins is President of Ireland. He was inaugurated for a second term in November 2018. President Higgins is a passionate political voice, a poet and writer, academic and statesman, human rights advocate, promoter of inclusive citizenship and champion of creativity within Irish society. He has previously served at almost every level of public life in Ireland, including as Ireland’s first Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. He served as a member of Dáil Éireann for 25 years and as a member of Seanad Éireann for nine years.
