Bursitis is an inflammation in a fluid-filled sac, known as a bursa (singular), that cushions the area between a tendon and a bone. It's basically a shock absorber that can become inflamed and painful when injured. See the bursae (plural) in the illustration to the left, using the knee joint as an example.

Bursitis, in fact, often often occurs in the knees and ankles, especially in those who walk or jog a lot. But can happen elsewhere as well. Bursitis may occur at any age, although it tends to occur more often as you get older.

Common symptoms of bursitis include the following.

* Pain or stiffness in the affected area

* Swelling

* Redness

* A feeling of warmth

* Decreased range of motion.

In severe cases, there can be a fever and chills. These occur when an injured bursa becomes inflamed and infected. This condition, known as septic bursitis,can sometimes be serious.

When you have septic bursitis, you may notice an area of red, broken skin. This is especially true if the bursitis occurs near the elbow or knee. There may even be drainage or pus. There's also a danger that the broken skin can become infected.

Bursitis is also sometimes characterized by a feeling of malaise and general ill-health. This is particularly true where septic bursitis has occurred.
