Synopsis of the Film-
माधवी का पति स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी था……और अब इकलौता सहारा उसका बेटा भी पिता के कदमों पर चल पड़ा…..समाचार-पत्रों में आजादी के लेख लिखता…..आखिरकार अंग्रेज सरकार के वफादार इंस्पेक्टर बागची माधवी के घर रेड डालते हैं और साजिश रच उसके आंख के तारे इकलौते सहारे उसके बेटे को फर्जी फंसा देते हैं……इसके एवज में इंसपेक्टर बागची का प्रमोशन हो जाता है।
माधवी बागची से बदला लेने के लिए जतन कर उसके घर की नौकरानी बन जाती है और मौका पाकर उसके इकलौते दुधमुहे बच्चे को मारना चाहती है……पर मौका मिलने पर भी नहीं मार पाती…..क्योंकि उसका उस बच्चे में अपना बेटा नजर आता है…... पर कुदरत का खेल बागची का बच्चा बीमार पड़ता है ……माधवी रात-दिन सेवा करती है……बागची स्वीकार करता है कि उसने बहुत पाप किये भगवान उसका दंड उसके बच्चे को न दे……पर अंततः बच्चा मर जाता है……और उसके मरने पर जो सबसे ज्यादा फूट-फूट कर रोता है वह थी माधवी……क्योंकि उसका हृदय एक माता का हृदय था……

Premchand was a firm believer in goodness of human nature. In so many of his stories whenever there is a conflict between vice and virtue, he has always shown, justice, uprightness, honesty, morality proving victorious. Mata Ka Hriday is one such story where Premchand one of the greatest short story tellers in the world has given a touching portrayal of the greatness of a mother.
Madhvi a window gives all her heart and soul in bringing up her only child Atmanand. He grows into an upright, virtuous altruist and is the cynosure and every villager but Atmanand's patriotic deeds land him up in jail. He is accused in a fake case of robbery. The person who frames him up is a police officer - Bagchi. Atmanand is sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment.
Madhvi is besides herself with grief, her heart seethes with revenge. Somehow she manages to enter the Bagchi family impersonating as a maidservant. She starts looking after the Bagchi's only child whom the couple loves dearly, soon the child gets attached with the poor old woman. Slowly and gradually as Madhvi gets acquainted with Mr. Bagchi compulsions as a police officer under British regime, Madhvi's anger wanes and her attachment with the child makes here sympathetic to her tormentor's family.
The climax comes when one day the child falls critically ill, and Madhvi who had entered the Bagchi family for revenges maddened with anxiety and concern for the child. She prays day and night for the child's life and the well being of the Bagchi family. That is the greatness of a mother. So moved are the Bagchis by her dedication and love for the child that the rude couple, at last, repents and weeps in front of their maid servant.
