A popular sitcom from the 2000s is getting a revival, but one main cast member will not be returning.
Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield are set to reprise their original roles in a four-episode revival of of “Malcolm in the Middle.”
However, Variety reported that Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey on the show, will not appear in the revival. Instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (“Fargo,” “The Expanse”) will take Sullivan’s place.
The rest of the cast includes Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae and Keeley Karsten. Timpano will play Malcolm’s youngest brother, Jamie, Murrae will play Malcolm’s youngest sibling, Kelly and Karsten will play Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, according to Variety.
The show’s logline indicates that “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party,” Variety previously reported.
“‘Malcolm in the Middle’ is a landmark sitcom that captured the essence of family life with humor, heart and relatability,” Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, told the outlet.
“Its hilarious and heartfelt portrayal of a lovably chaotic family resonated with audiences of all ages, and we’re so excited to welcome the original cast back to bring that magic to life againm,” Davis said. “With Linwood Boomer and the creative team at the helm, these new episodes will have all the laughs, pranks, and mayhem fans loved — along with a few surprises that remind us why this show is so timeless.”
A premiere date for the Disney+ update of the classic sitcom has yet to be announced.
“Malcolm in the Middle” first premiered on Jan. 9, 2000. It ran for seven seasons, ending on May 14, 2006.
The sitcom has been syndicated worldwide and received widespread critical acclaim. “Malcolm in the Middle” was named one of series of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
The show also won a Peabody Award, seven Emmy Awards, one Grammy Award and received seven Golden Globe nominations.
