Sai Darshan ~ Rathotsavam Chariot Festival 18/11/1996

The glorious week-long birthday celebrations of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba begin every year on November 18th with the festive Rathotsavam festival, in which Venugopala Swami, the village deity of Puttaparthi, is taken in procession from the main Gopuram gate of Prasanthi Nilayam in a magnificent ratha (chariot) to the Pedda Venkappa Raju Kalyana Mandapam, which is what was the old mandir or patha mandir in which Swami stayed in the 1940s before the birth of Prasanthi Nilayam. In the process, Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, and Hanuman are also taken in procession in a Tiruchi Utsava from the Sai Kulwant Hall to the Kalayana Mandapam and then back to the mandir. The sounds of Nadaswaram, the chants of Vedas, and the enthusiastic singing of bhajans provide for a grand commencement of the birthday celebrations of our Lord. Until 2007, Sai Geetha, Swami's favorite pet elephant, would be there to receive blessings from Swami, and would enjoy being fed and fondled by Him. This video portrays some of that intimacy, as well as snippets of the grand procession returning to Sai Kulwant Hall. Swami grants darshan and distributes sarees to the lady devotees present in the Sai Kulwant Hall. This event marked the commencement of the 71st birthday celebrations in the year 1996.
