Puma, the top predator of Patagonia

The Rewilding Team at Tompkins Conservation Chile has been monitoring pumas since 2008 in Patagonia National Park. This work is helping us to better understand the top predator in the ecosystem of Patagonia. By activating a delicate chain of ecological processes, the puma plays a crucial role. Pumas control populations of herbivores, such as the guanaco, and provide carrion that feeds foxes, condors, hawks, and other species. As a top predator it upholds the structure of the ecosystem, and helps maintain intricate patterns of biodiversity. Each member of an ecosystem has a unique contribution which keeps it intact. A complete ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem.
