This video introduces the main types of sitar based on the number of strings and their tuning

SITAR LESSONS 2

welcome to the second sitar lesson
today we see the three main types of sitar from which also the most modern forms of tunings derive. They are related to three famous artists who are Ustad Vilayat Khan, who played a sitar with 6 main strings, Pandit Ravi Shankar, who played a sitar with 7 main strings and Pandit Nikhil Banerji, who played a sitar with 8 main strings. Basically in the part below the main strings run a set of 11 or 12 or 13 sympathetic strings called taraf. These sympathetic strings are common to all types of sitar and are held in tension by pegs or tuning pegs or kunti that lie parallel to the neck and fingerboard. Instead, as regards the three types of sitar linked to the three schools I mentioned earlier, the differences are these: the first string in the Vilayat Khan (the six-stringed sitar) is pitched on the MA, the second string, (usually it sticks to this or if you want you can choose this peg or Kunti) is tuned on the central SA of the instrument, in this case the instrument is tuned in D, therefore the SA corresponds to D, while the MA corresponds to G. The third string is tuned to the minor or major third or GA (F or F #). While the fourth string is in tune on the fifth above the central SA or PA (A). The fifth string is tuned on the upper SA (one octave above) to the middle SA of the second string and with the sixth string it forms the pair called CIKARI. So, in summary, the six main strings in Vilayat Khan style sitar are tuned like this:

VILAYAT KHAN style
1 = MA (G) baj
2 = SA (D) jhori
3 = GA (F #) or (F) ga
4 = PA (A) pancham
5 = SA (D) cikari
6 = SA (D) cikari

What are the differences with the other two types? The Ravi Shankar excludes the GA higher than the SA of the second string and uses these two keys (KUNTI) for the bass, that is, it adds the PA and SA one octave below the SA of the second string, then excludes a higher note for the benefit of two low notes. Instead the Nikhil Banerji model adds an eighth Kunti in this position in order to have both the upper GA string as in the Vilayat Khan, and the basses that are typical of Ravi Shankar's sitar.

RAVI SHANKAR style
1 = MA (G) baj
2 = SA (D) jhori
3 = PA (A) laraj (bass)
4 = SA (D) kharaj (bass)
5 = PA (A) pancham
6 = SA (D) cikari
7 = SA (D) cikari

NIKHIL BANERJI style
1 = MA (G) baj
2 = SA (D) jhori
3 = PA (A) laraj (bass)
4 = SA (D) kharaj (bass)
5 = GA (F #) or (F) ga
6 = PA (A) pancham
7 = SA (D) cikari
8 = SA (D) cikari
