The Legend of Thomas Bay, also known as "The Bay of Death," is rooted in an eerie tale from Alaska’s wilderness. It originates from a story told by prospector Harry Colp in the early 1900s. According to Colp, a fellow prospector named Charlie had ventured into the remote Thomas Bay area, near the Taku River, in search of gold. Instead, Charlie encountered a terrifying group of strange, humanoid creatures described as half-human, half-beast with coarse hair and claw-like hands.

Fleeing in fear, Charlie claimed to have barely escaped with his life. Locals later connected the story to a long-standing legend that the bay was cursed after a massive landslide had killed a Tlingit village hundreds of years earlier. Since then, Thomas Bay has earned a reputation as a place of supernatural occurrences, earning its nickname as Alaska’s "Devil's Country."
