Sunday Papers Bass Cover

"Sunday Papers" by Joe Jackson off of his "Look Sharp" album which came out in the year of our lord, 1979. The bass was played by the great Graham Maby who actually was kind and humble enough to participate in an episode of "Name That Bass Line."

Graham's bass lines were always aggressively played and his tone put the bass right in your face. I thought he was known for playing a Precision or a Jazz bass but I knew there was a story behind the bass he used to record most of Jackson's early albums with. It turns out he used an Ibanez "lawsuit era" jazz bass which I believe I stumbled across a video of him using. It looks strikingly similar to the bass I'm using in this video.

I always get a chuckle out of the vocal response to the "...gay politician" line - "Yeah!"

I believe that Graham is still active and has been best known in recent years to be in Natalie Merchant's supporting band, though he, much like Pino Palladino, has stepped away from his trademark sound and style to suit the music he's currently playing. But that's what it's all about, isn't it?

Enjoy your Sunday.
