Moto Guzzi Click, No Start Fix - Starter Relay Bypass - 2004 Moto Guzzi Breva 750

*I whipped this video together as an afterthought mid-way through the project (you can see an already cut wire.) It's pretty raw but, when combined with the resources below, hopefully this can help some of you:

Most Moto Guzzis, at some point, will experience issues with the starter. Here, I address the issue in my 2004 Breva 750. From what I understand, a similar fix is available on most models, new and vintage.

For a more in-depth discussion on this issue, check out these forum post:

and

And for a full electrical diagram of the 750 Breva, see here:

The gist of it is this: the way Moto Guzzi designed the electrical circuit for supplying power to the starter relay is flawed. Non-technically speaking, the circuit is so long that, over time, even when properly maintained, the wear on the electronics can cause so much resistance in the circuit that there is an unacceptable voltage drop (estimates of roughly a 4v drop.) With such a voltage drop, the starter solenoid is unable to engage.

This bypass eliminates the resistance of the circuit and supplies adequate voltage to the starter relay, allowing it to engage the starter (solenoid) properly and start flawlessly.

My bike often clicked when I tried to start it. Sometimes it would start right up, other times it would click a few times then start, and sometimes it would click or stop clicking and not start, leaving me either stranded or forced to push-start it. This fix solved the problem.

**Please note, this mod is relevant to almost all Guzzis and I would recommend doing to your bike even if you aren't experiencing this issue yet. That being said, the stock Valeo starters on Guzzis often go bad themselves. The magnets can break loose and the starter motor will chew itself up. If your starter tries to turn and seems very labored, will turn a few cranks and see to drain your battery, or will only turn with a full charge/jumper pack, consider getting a new starter. This job is dead simple and a starter isn't too expensive. This starter will fit the 750 Breva (even though Amazon says it doesn't) and can be found here:
