Compassionate Action, Bella Bonner - Picture This 2025

Picture This is an annual curated storytelling event hosted by Housing Matters that spotlights unique perspectives on what it means to build, sustain, and celebrate a culture of compassion within the context of resolving homelessness in Santa Cruz County.

Esabella (Bella) Bonner is a Santa Cruz-based entrepreneur, visionary, and award-winning changemaker dedicated to inclusivity, equity, and joyful resistance. In 2020, she organized the largest social protest in Santa Cruz County history, centering Black and BIPOC voices and sparking her passion for movement work. She later founded Black Surf Santa Cruz (BSSC), an organization fostering healing and wellness through surfing and community connection. Under her leadership, BSSC has earned widespread acclaim, including Best Nonprofit by the NEXTies (2023) and Santa Cruz Waves “Swellies” (2023). Bella, a recipient of the ACLU’s Bell of Freedom Award, has also been recognized by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. A dynamic speaker and 2024 TEDx presenter, she continues to champion anti-racist values as a strategic equity advisor, creating spaces of belonging and empowerment for historically excluded communities.
