New bridge,new journey. #bridge #journey #life #river #nature #views #yt #ytshorts #videos #reels
The under-construction New Farakka Bridge (the second Farakka road bridge) over the Ganga River is a highly anticipated infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity between North and South Bengal, as well as neighbouring states like Jharkhand.
Key Technical & Project Details
Total Length: 5.468 km (making it one of the longest bridges over the Ganga in India).
Configuration: 4-Lane highway bridge on the Farakka-Raiganj section of NH-12 (formerly NH-34).
Project Cost: ₹622.04 crore.
Objective: Built parallel to the aging, heavily congested 2-lane road over the existing Farakka Barrage to ensure smooth freight and public transit.
Current Status
Construction Progress: The physical construction of the bridge is roughly 96% complete, with minor final touch-ups and safety features being wrapped up.
Partial/Emergency Access: While the official grand inauguration is pending, the administration has recently begun allowing restricted, one-way movement for emergency services (such as ambulances, medical vehicles, and police vans) to alleviate chronic medical transit delays.
Public Demand for Opening: Because of prolonged traffic jams on the old barrage route, regional business organizations (like the Malda Merchants' Chamber of Commerce & Industry) have formally urged Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to expedite the final safety clearances and fully operationalize the bridge for commercial and public vehicles.
Impact on Trade and Tourism
Once fully open to the public, the bridge will eliminate hours of traffic congestion for trucks carrying agricultural goods (like Malda and Murshidabad's famous mangoes and litchis) and aggregates from Jharkhand. It will also significantly shorten travel times to key tourist destinations like Gour Malda, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim.
Bonus Update: A survey is also underway for a second Farakka Railway Bridge to run next to this new road bridge, which will further strengthen the rail grid between South and North Bengal in the coming years. #like #subscribe #followme
