Deep Dive: Pickle and Soldering | Jewelry 101

If you solder, you have to pickle. The two go hand in hand. In this week's episode, Susan explains why every time you solder, you have to pickle. Pickling is simply dissolving firescale from the top layer of your metal jewelry after it's been heated. It's called pickling because jewelers used to remove firescale with a solution of alum, which is the same compound used to make pickles!
