Beautiful Disaster | Salton Sea Helicopter Tour

When we bought a 2007 Robinson R44 Raven II the goal was to have a helicopter that could comfortably carry our family to interesting destinations. In this video, I fly our helicopter around and over the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is a massive body of water in the desert near Palm Springs, California. Born from an ill-conceived agricultural redirection of the Colorado River, the Salton Sea became a tourist destination in the 1950s and '60s. By the 1990s, it had morphed into a full-on ecological disaster.

That disaster continues today. And yet, the Salton Sea is also a place of beauty with bird sanctuaries, unbridled artistic expression, and hearty communities of people who endure despite poverty and disease.
