Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown RN.

This is an appreciation of the life of one of the world's best pilots.
Brought up in the Scottish Borders and educated at Edinburgh University, Eric Brown trained to fly with the University Air Squadron and in 1939 joined the Navy as a pilot where he was given the nickname 'Winkle' because of his modest stature. There followed a most incredible career culminating in holding world records for the number of aircraft types flown and the number of carrier deck landings made. Interviewed by Kirsty Young for Desert Island Discs she described his daredevil life 'as making James Bond look like a slacker' He died in February 2016 aged 97 and now former members of Edinburgh University Air Squadron are raising funds for a memorial statue to be erected at Edinburgh Airport, where he trained to fly with the RAF. He was an inspiration to us all.
