How unpleasant does an action have to be to change behavior?

The rule is that the "NO" has to be as strong as the "GO," but if the unpleasant action is well-timed and there is no previous pattern or habit of bad behavior to break, it does not have to be very serious at all -- or last very long. Puppies and children, for example, can be steered with little more than praise and a few rare harsh words most of the time.

But what if a bad behavior is deeply ingrained in a young adult and is self-reinforcing to boot? The U.S. military has found that a lot of exercise, forging a pack dynamic within a group of raw new recruits, and powerful aversives all work to forge the best, and most disciplined, fighting force in the world.
