A Sicilian Carretto's Journey - From Racalmuto to Hamilton

A Sicilian Carretto, an icon of Sicilian culture, was commissioned to be built in 2018 in Racalmuto, Sicily by a group of Hamiltonians. Through the generous donation by Mr. Jack Marchese, individuals comprising the Carretto Project Committee and other donors, the Carretto was built by Dino Agro in Sicily, shipped to Canada, and unveiled at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario a year later. The Carretto is a gift to the citizens of Hamilton, Ontario, 30,000 of whom can trace their origins to the Island of Sicily. The "Hamilton" Sicilian Carretto is a reminder of our familial roots and Sicilian history and culture to be enjoyed by generations to come......the paintings on the Carretto were done by artist Roberto Caputo. Racalmuto and Hamilton are twin cities for over 30 years and through the twinning relationship, Hamiltonians together with Racalmutese have initiated other significant projects such as the installation of the Leonardo Sciascia statue in immigration park at Liuna Station in Hamilton.
