Beautify Yourself!!!

It has been reported by Ibn Mas'ood, radi Allahu anhu, that the messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam, said, "Oh Allah, you have beautified my outward appearance, so beautify my character".[1]

عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم "اللهم أحسنت خلقي, فحسن خلقي" رواه أحمد و صححه ابن حبان

We've mentioned that mankind has two images; the first image is his physical appearance and the other image is his internal moral fiber (character). From the people, there are those who have a beautiful physical appearance and beautiful character. This person is similar to the messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam, and others (from the Muslims) whom Allah has blessed to have these two descriptions. Likewise, there are some people who may not have an attractive physical appearance coupled with terrible character. They are the most despicable of the people.

Also, there are people who are not physically attractive; however their internal moral fiber or character is exceptional. (In this case), the mere fact that this individual is not good-looking doesn't affect him, as long as he emanates good. The opposite is also true. There are those that are good-looking, yet their character is appalling! Individuals like this are similar to hypocrites and Allah's refuge is sought! (This type of individual) is disgusting!

The messenger of Allah's, salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam, prayer consisted of two things. The first thing was having a beautiful attractive appearance and (the second was) having beautiful character. The messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam, said "Oh Allah, you have beautified my outward appearance so beautify my character". The messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam, was the most complete human being when it came to having a beautiful appearance and beautiful character. This is following the messenger of Allah, salla Allah alayhe wa sallam. A Muslim should make this du'a and he doesn't say "I am not in need. I am already good-looking and I have good character, I don't have a problem with this" rather a Muslim should seek assistance from Allah that He, The Most High, beautifies his physical appearance and his character. Allah knows best...[2]
