Folks, saddle fit starts before you ever pull a cinch tight.

When I set a mule or donkey saddle, I’m looking at one thing first — the scapula. The front edge of my bar needs to sit right at the edge of that shoulder blade. Not on top of it. Not behind it. Right at the edge.

Now look at the pad — thicker and wider where it needs to be, especially if you’ve got downhill hip. That matters.

When you saddle up, don’t just throw it anywhere. Set it with intention. Then breeching first. That’s your anchor. That’s what keeps the saddle from sliding forward.

And when you cinch?

Three stages.

Snug. Let them settle. Snug again. Then finish it off.

If they start dancing around, you’ve got it too tight.

Back cinch first. Front cinch snug. Breast collar last. Everything balanced. Nothing cranked down.

Comfort makes a willing mule.
Rushing makes a sore one.

Take your time. Do it right. #short
