KREIDLER RACING HISTORY || 1969 || GRAND PRIX OF SPAIN || Ep.10
GENERAL:
Date: 4 May 1969
Circuit: Circuit del Jarama (ES) near Madrid
RACE DATA:
The 1969 Spanish Grand Prix Road Race was the first Grand Prix of the Motorcycle World Championship in the 1969 season. The races were held on May 4, 1969 at the Circuito Permanente del Jarama in Madrid. Only the solo classes came to the start.
Already during the training of the 50cc class in Spain it was clear that three riders were far above the rest: Aalt Toersen with the Van Veen-Kreidler, Barry Smith with the Derbi and Jan de Vries, also with a Van Veen-Kreidler.
Toersen started fastest in the wet race but was soon joined by Santiago Herrero (Derbi). De Vries quickly fell behind but was still third, in front of a large group of pursuers. Toersen and Herrero made it an exciting race for five laps, but then Herrero fell. Smith managed to take second place but fell into his urge to reach Toersen. To save the Spanish honor, Ángel Nieto had to take enormous risks. He managed to reach second place. Jan de Vries rode it safe and held onto third place. Paul Lodewijkx had already dropped out with a badly running engine. He had to use the 1968 Jamathi because his new machine was not ready yet. But the Dutch success was enormous with three podium places, especially because at that time (between 9 and 10 a.m.) the grandstand was almost exclusively populated by a hundred Dutch people who had a charter flight, organized by the Motor Racing Team Netherlands (MRTN) to Jarama.
RESULTS GRAND PRIX OF SPAIN:
1. Aalt Toersen, 42''15'9(Kreidler)
2. Ángel Nieto, +13'9 (Derbi)
3. Jan de Vries, +16' (Kreidler)
4. Gilberto Parlotti, +16'4 (Tomos)
5. Giovanni Lombardi (Guazzoni)
6. Jakob Unterladstätter (KTM)
7. Herbert Denzler (Kreidler)
8. Jean-Louis Pasquier (Derbi)
9. Bruno Veigel (Honda)
10. Juan Bordons (Derbi)
Fastest Lap: Ángel Nieto
