Trucks and other vehicles left the Port of Dover, Kent, on Thursday amidst the deployment of COVID-19 testing stations at the port. Thousands of trucks have been unable to make the channel crossing following the French government's announcement on Sunday to close the border amidst concerns surrounding a new strain of COVID-19 spreading through the UK.
An agreement was struck on Tuesday between France and the UK, establishing a protocol for border crossings going forwards, whereby travellers must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken up to 72 hours before the intended crossing. As a result, new COVID-19 testing stations have been deployed in the Port of Dover to assist with the testing of truckers and other passengers.
According to official communications by the UK Department of Transport, Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) have been asked not to travel to Kent until further notice. The current traffic gridlock situation is likely to mean that thousands of stranded truckers will be spending their Christmas in their vehicles.
