Bentley Restoration - 'Mother Gun' Replica - as raced at Le Mans in 1928
We travelled to the UK to purchase and pack up the 'parts that remained' of the Bentley for a client. It was then shipped back to Australia to begin the transformation process.
A Vintage Motor Garage commission – Replica of the 1927 prototype 41⁄2 litre Bentley “Mother Gun” as raced to victory in the 1928 Le Mans 24hr race. The starting point was a very derelict 1926 Bentley 3 litre dragged out of an overgrown garden.
Many of the original parts had to be replaced or re-made, the remainder were completely overhauled. The myriad team car parts, many unique to “Mother Gun”, were manufactured using original photographs and period articles as references.
The photos have been left uncaptioned deliberately as the intention of the film is to convey the essence of what is required to produce a car like this rather than provide a detailed “how to” guide. The photos are mostly arranged chronologically rather than in component order, as much of the work was happening concurrently. Some other restoration projects being undertaken by Vintage Motor Garage at the same time can be seen in the background of various photos. Most days there were at least five people from various disciplines working on the project.
Ten craftsmen from various disciplines took more than 4320 hours, spaced over almost twenty months, to create this masterpiece.
Nearly 75% of the total cost of restoration was labour, the remainder was parts and materials.
A photographic journal attempting to pay homage to our craftsmen for over 4320 hours of work carried out over a period of nearly 20 months; bringing motoring history to life.
Those hours have been condensed down to under 20 minutes but still show the magnitude of the restoration itself and acknowledges the abilities of those who actually made it happen.
This compilation also provides some back story to the original videos.
This vehicle now resides overseas.
