Meta Al chief urges teens to master 'vibe-coding'

Alexandr Wang, Meta's Chief Al Officer, is calling on
teenagers to dedicate thousands of hours to experimenting with artificial intelligence tools, comparing the current moment to when Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg learned programming in their youth.

Speaking on the TBPN podcast during Meta Connect 2025 in September, Wang urged young people to embrace "vibe-coding"-a hands-on approach to learning Al that involves using natural language to command coding assistants.

"If you're 13 right now, you should spend all your time vibe-coding," Wang said. "This is the Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg moment. The people who grow up with these tools will have an immense advantage in the
future economy.

From Computing Revolution to AI Revolution

Wang, who became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at age 24 after founding Scale AI, drew parallels between today's AI boom and the personal computing revolution of the 1980s. He recounted how Gates used to sneak into labs at night to practice programming, suggesting teenagers today should adopt similar dedication—but with AI assistants instead.

The term "vibe-coding" was coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 and quickly gained traction across the tech industry. Collins Dictionary named it Word of the Year for 2025, defining it as "the use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code". Google CEO Sundar Pichai has also discussed using vibe-coding tools like Cursor and Replit to build custom webpages.

Wang emphasized that mastering these tools requires significant investment. "If you just happen to spend, like, 10,000 hours playing with the tools and figuring out how to use them better than other people, that's a huge advantage," he explained. Andrew Ng, co-founder of Google Brain, echoed similar sentiments, calling this "the best time yet to learn to code" as AI simplifies programming.
Layoffs Amid AI Investment Push

Wang's comments come as Meta undergoes restructuring in its AI division. In October, the company laid off approximately 600 employees from its Superintelligence Labs, affecting teams in AI infrastructure, research, and product development. The cuts did not impact the newly formed division closely associated with Wang's leadership, which houses many of Meta's highest-paid AI recruits.

"By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact," Wang wrote in an internal memo. Despite the layoffs, Meta continues to invest heavily in AI, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg calling 2025 "a defining year for AI" and committing $60-65 billion to AI infrastructure.

Wang joined Meta in June 2025 after the company invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, acquiring a 49% stake. The 28-year-old now leads Meta's Superintelligence Labs alongside former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, positioning the company to compete with rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft in the race for advanced AI systems.
