Abba - SOS
Abba travelled to Warsaw on October 7-8 1976 for a Polish TV special. They had been voted most popular group in Eastern Europe. This was the first time a major international band had performed behind the Iron Curtain. The Polish government chartered an "Abba Special" plane to bring Frida, Benny, Bjorn and about 100 journalists to Warsaw. Agnetha travelled seperately with her father the previous day. She and Bjorn did not risk travelling on the same plane, they had young daughter Linda to consider. The tv producer had the very clever idea of Agnetha singing on the ground looking up to the rest of the group in the sky, while they sang the chorus from the plane back to her.
In a press conference later on, the Polish journalists questions were quite amusing:
"Why do you sing in English"?
"Mr. Andersson, is Stig your father"?
"Miss Folkog and Miss Lintatt (Polish pronounciations) what is your attitude to love"?
Agnetha hugs Bjorn and replies "This!"
Frida announced "I like making love!".
It is not known if the Polish journalists understood.
Stig then told the journalists that the total budget granted by the Polish state for international records was going to be used entirely for 800,000 copies of the Arrival album. Everyone in the room applauded.
SOS was Abba's first truly classic single, and signalled that they had survived the Eurovision Song Contest winners curse. It was released on June 3 1975, and reached number one in many countries by early July. Agnetha's pleading lead vocals captured the public imagination.
The characteristic guitar and synthesiser rifts that run throughout the song were added at very the last minute, when Bjorn and Benny were staying late in the recording studio one night.
