It is often said that grace is the distinguishing mark of the Christian religion. While this may be true on some level, since grace is at the center of the work of God in Christ, there do exist religions that cite the pouring out of grace from deities to its servants. So what’s so radical about the Christian notion of grace? First of all, it permeates the good news proclaimed by the early church. The word grace is included in all of Paul’s thirteen letters and lies at the heart of the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit as proclaimed by the apostles. Furthermore, who we are as recipients of God’s grace offers insight into the heart and character of God himself. As will become evident, this makes the gospel extraordinarily unique when compared to other faiths.
