PML explained #26

Hello and welcome to the next episode of the explained series.

This episode is on Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML is a rare and often fatal viral disease characterised by progressive demyelination and damage of the white matter of the brain at multiple locations. It is caused by the JC virus, which is normally present and kept under control by the immune system. The JC virus is harmless except in cases of weakened immune systems.
