we got home Joe helping me every step of the way since I was light headed from the massive headache I had "I'm sorry babe, but none of this would've happened if you had just listened to me, you know how my anger gets" "i couldn't just leave Selena in her bed crying, she was crying for me Joe I'm sorry if you don't understand the bond I have with her" he paused and looked at me I saw his hand twitch but he clenched it into a fist and turned away "don't make me mad!" "wait...where is Selena?!" "don't worry she's at the sitter's" he growled "go lay on the couch I'll go get her" I didn't dare disobey him, I couldn't not with the current state I was in so I grabbed a blanket and my slippers and went and sat on the couch as Joe in a rather bad mood left to go pick up Selena

a few minutes later he returned in a better mood bouncing Selena up and down making googly voices at her I understood in a way why he was abusive towards me...if anything happened to me and I left or did something stupid he could lose not only me but Selena, that was why he was so easily angered by anything I did or whenever I disobeyed him, I couldn't leave, not if I wanted to keep Selena safe and myself alive, suddenly I felt something tugging on my blanket bringing me out of my reverie, it was Selena she'd crawled over from Joe to me and was trying to get my attention I started bending down to pick her up, head throbbing the whole time, Joe quickly walked over and picked her up to put her on my lap "there's mommy!" he cooed at her the way the "old" Joe would've talked to me sadly I wondered what had happened in the 2 years since that one night that got a little out of hand, I'd lost not only my virginity, but the old Joe that I desperately loved and desperately wanted back

the next morning while Joe was at work mom came over to check in on me like she did once a month tsking at the bruises she saw on my cheek and my arms she'd come not only to check up on me, but to help look after Selena the sitter was ill and couldn't take her today and after much fussing and fighting I'd convinced Joe to just let me look after her "demi you've got to do SOMETHING! You cannot keep living like this!" "you don't understand mom if I do anything or leave or Joe suspects anything out of the ordinary it'll only make things worse, I have to take the punches" "you CAN'T hun your life is at stake, and you don't only have your life to think about" she looked over at Selena who was napping in her play pen "you have to think of Selena" she said, her voice heavy with worry "he hasn't raised a single hand to her, not ever, in fact he treats her better than he treats me" "for now!, but what about when she gets older, and starts misbehaving the way kids do, with the way his anger is, honey you don't know what he could do!" I had to admit she was right and I'd be damned if I ever let someone, even Joe harm Selena, I hadn't been thinking about the future, hell I could barely think of tomorrow, let alone a few years down the line "you have to do something, come back and live with me, we could work something out" I looked at her in horror "no mom! I couldn't, that'd be endangering you too" "well...you have to think of something, I just couldn't...the thought of..." she choked on tears of worry she'd been trying to hold back "the thought of anything happening to you, or, or Selena I just, I couldn't picture it" "don't worry" I kissed her on the cheek "I'll come up with something" "i hope you do...soon" she looked down at her watch "i gotta go, lunch shift is over" she looked at me sullenly "if you need anything...or...uh if something happens, PLEASE, call me" "i will" I cringed inside as I lied to her "goodbye, love you" "love you too" I whispered as she walked out the door
