Shotgun Shells going off outside chamber - POINT BLANK

Since the first demonstration where we set off a birdshot shell in the Fith Ops perimeter alarm device, we were flooded with comments asking us to try high brass 00 buck shot and slugs. Will the results be different? Why do the shells always burst at the top?
What about using Pyrodex?
