Koalas are specialized folivores that consume up to 1.3 kilograms of eucalyptus leaves daily, relying on them for both nutrition and hydration. Because eucalyptus is fibrous, low-energy, and toxic, koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy, using a specialized cecum to break down toxins.

Dietary and Behavioral Details

Dietary Selection: Despite eating over 700 eucalyptus species, koalas are picky, favoring only about 50 types based on low toxin levels and high protein content.

Unique Digestion: They have a specialized
-meter-long gut organ called a cecum, which contains bacteria to break down fiber and neutralize poison.

Hydration: Because they consume moisture from leaves, they rarely need to drink water.

High Intake: They eat between and of leaves daily, which is about of their body weight.

Energy Conservation: Due to the low-nutrient diet, they have small brains and low metabolisms, spending most of their time resting to save energy.

Feeding Habits

Active Hours: They are most active between dusk and dawn, with a significant portion of their active time spent eating.

Preferred Parts: They select the softest, freshest leaves.

Toxicity: Eucalyptus leaves are poisonous to most animals, but koalas have evolved the unique ability to feed on them, largely eliminating competition for food. #travel
