Audi A6 40 TDI S-Line (2021) Long Term Review – The Perfect All-Rounder!

I was given the opportunity to spend several weeks from the end of 2020 into 2021 with Audi’s latest-generation business class sedan, the new A6. While memories of 2020 are something which I think we would all rather forget and social distancing has played havoc on all of our lives, the one thing which you certainly can still enjoy is long road trips and what could be better than the perfect all-rounder for an extended time!

• Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch
• Fuel economy: 5.2 L/100km
• Boot capacity: 530 litres

The Style

The all-new 8th-generation Audi A6 represents the brands most sophisticated look into this class of vehicle since its inception. From the outside, the new model features sharp and angular lines, with the A6 lines family familiar 2/3’s door body panels to 1/3 window structure which offers a svelte business sophistication. The S-Line trim package fitted to the test vehicle also adds an array of sporting components and beautiful 20-inch Audi Sport Alloys.

With business being the order of the day within this class of vehicle, the A6 is also able to offer a wealth of interior cabin space and couple all of this with levels of sophistication and technology that would easily be at home in any business class jet.

Class Leading Efficiency

Some time back I drove Audi’s S6 sedan and was able to experience its alluring blend of sporting focus with business articulated manners. The A6 40 TDI, however, is a bit different. What this car was able to show me over its extended test period is simply how perfectly it is able to blend business class comfort, technology and sophistication with absolute efficiency.

It is usually a small city car that springs to mind when the economy or efficiency is mentioned. Something with very few horses under the hood and not much in the way of creature comforts usually garners up images of being “efficient.” The A6 40 TDI though re-writes the efficiency rule book by offering-up real world 1000 plus km open road range and over my several weeks of testing, I was able to average below 6.5-litres per 100km on several trips. To me, it’s simply astonishing to think that a vehicle can offer this amount of space, comfort, luxury and technology and add incredibly frugal efficiency over and above all of this.

Travel Business Class

The new dual-screen setup (equipped with MMI Navigation Plus) is a major highlight of the dash which now features in the A6 as was first seen in Audi’s Q8. Further adding to its technological advancements, the new A6 features Audi’s outstanding Virtual Cockpit digital instrumentation cluster and options such a floating heads-up-display and Bang & Olufsen sound to offer-up one of the best experiences possible within this segment.

Add a boot capacity of 530-litres and you have a vehicle which has the luggage carrying capacity set to rival its interior occupant space. I packed the vehicle for several long road trips and was astonished at its interior space and luggage capacity.
Audi Efficiency

All powered by Audi’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor, the A6 40 TDI delivers a very healthy 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque. While it may not be as eager as the mighty S6 in terms of sheer off the mark acceleration, for me its simply mind-bending efficiency is equally as impressive.

In Conclusion

I could not have asked for a better vehicle to cover several thousand kilometres over the 2020/2021 festive period. I have always liked large luxury sedans and what Audi has proven to me with the new A6 is that the brand is committed to delivering a level of expectation which can only be described and summed-up in typical Audi style by the term Vorsprung. This segment definitely has a new benchmark!
