"The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans. The most successful commercial version, recorded in 1964 by the English rock groupThe Animals, was a number one hit in the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Finland, Canada and Australia.
Many artists have recorded the song including Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Woodie Guthrie, Lead Belly, roy Acuff, Glen Yarbrough, Andy Griffith, Miriam Makeba, Dolly Parton and Nina Simone.
It’s not really known what building or place “House of the Rising Sun” refers to. Various ideas are that it refers to the slave pens of a plantation, the plantation house itself, a prison, a brothel, or a treatment clinic for prostitutes with syhphils. Dave Van Ronk writes in his autobiography that he saw pictures of the old Orleans Parish Women’s Prison, which had an entrance decorated with a rising sun design. He considered this proof that "House of the Rising Sun" had been a nickname for the prison.
Like many classic folk ballads, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is uncertain. Musicologists say that it is based on the traditional 18th century English ballads such as The Unfortunate Rake, and that English emigrants brought the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting.[citation needed][dubious – discuss] There is also a mention of a house-like pub called the "Rising Sun" in the classic Black Beauty published in 1877, set in London, England, which may have influenced the title.[citation needed]
The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it for Vocalion Records in 1934.[2] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley. The song was among those collected by folklorist Alan Lomax when in 1937 in equipment in in the house of a singer and activist named Tilman Cadle. In 1937 he recorded a performance by Georgia Turner, the 16-year-old daughter of a Middlesboro, Kentucky miner. He called it The Rising Sun Blues.[2] Lomax later recorded several other versions.
