So I went out and bought an NFT.
Let's back up: I have little to no experience with cryptocurrencies, but I decided to give it a shot. What are the worst-case scenarios? Do you have a nosebleed? Setting off a cascade of events that shuts down the grid on the East Coast by accident? What is the difference between fame and fortune?

It's only natural that I embarked on my voyage on the same day that Bloomberg pronounced the NFT bubble had burst, with prices plummeting 70% from their peak in mid-March. Regardless, I sat down at my computer and resolved not to log off until I had received an NFT. Perhaps it was a good omen. Perhaps costs were falling, and I wouldn't have to spend as much money on my NFT.

NFTs were originally mentioned in a Paris Review piece on the Rare Digital Art Festival in 2018. Although the word "non-fungible token" or "NFT" was not used in the article, the digital artifacts described in it became known as such. "Non-fungible" simply means that they are one-of-a-kind. You can exchange a $1 bill for another $1 bill, regardless of where the first $1 bill came from. NFTs come with a unique code for each token. Even if they're fundamentally the same thing, each one is unique and might be worth a lot of money.
