African Village Life \\ Cooking The Most Appetizing Food At A Village Wedding
Hello there Besties, thank you for tuning in. Today i bring you a day in a life of a village culinary and our destination led us to Onamtanda Village. There i and Tuna came togather to cater for a wedding on the day our groom was to officially collect his bride from their home at oshinyadila village to his homestead in Ohalushu village.
I didnt want to bore you with so much talk in the video, so if you are reading this part now chances are you will continue reading the following paragraphs below. Almost everything calls for a celebration in the ovawambo wedding calendar, from the send off to asking for a hand in marriage, payment of Lobola, the engagement /announcement, placement of a white flag on the homestead, the official wedding day, the day the bride leave her parent homestead to the grooms homestead and everything in between.
The white flag is a symbol of peace and that the wedding is underway, so from far one can notice more people begin to arrive days prior to the wedding. As per Awambo culture a wedding ceremony in the village is an affair for all even though formal invitations are sent out.
Regardless the bride or grooms family have to cater for all their guests in their repective homesteads. So everyone is welcome to attend and contribute livestock, drinks, traditional food ingridients and beverages as well monetary donations. The day before the wedding marks the official arrival of the elder who will be responsible for protocol of the groom, this is usually a namesake or anyone chosen from the bride or grooms fathers side of the family known as Xegona.
After all formal greetings Xegona presents traditional attire and gifts and he or she has to dress the bride or groom in them. It is not too long before the wedding singers "Emhoko" begin to arrive and their soul purpose is to sing traditional wedding songs for day and night for about three days. The wedding singers togather with some elders, matron of honour and groomsmen travel to the bride's homestead to deliver her suitecase which cobtains her wedding dress and other apreciative items.
It is custom that the suitcase must be opened infront of some elders, bride and matron of honour and each item carefully removed and showcased. The wedding singer will continue to sing while awaiting the accaptance of the suitecase and its unraveling. A word of caution to those who intend to marry in the awambo tribe is that, the late delivery of the suitcase can have you and the wedding singers locked out untill the early hours of the morning or the next day which is day of the wedding.
Delivering the suitecase early is very important. The day of the wedding, festivities continue and after the photoshoot to the bridal party is welcomed to the brides homestead, where the community, friends and family stand under the tree to greet the bride and groom.
They deliver their blessings, prayer, word of encouragement as well as dashing of gifts. Thereafter dinner will be served in designated places in the homestead and this is usually announced by the head of the house, campaign manager or anyone entrusted to do so.
The grooms family leave the brides homestead most of the time without the bride so as to allow her to say her goodbyes as they will return to collect her the next day. As the next day arrives, the same chain of events as the previous day unfold. festivities continue as people dance and sing in style, our shitenya/makoti is officially home.
