Now over eighty years old, this classic family film has played in many American homes on Christmas eve at home or entertained children out of school for the summer holidays. And there couldn’t be a more welcoming, heartwarming, or colorful scene than the moment when Dorothy lands in Munchkinland. There, the Wizard of Oz Munchkins greets her group by group, helping her to feel comfortable in Oz and seeing her off as she takes her first steps down the Yellow Brick Road. Given all this, it would probably shock you to know some of the rumors that circulated about these cheerful characters.

Off-set, the Wizard of Oz Munchkins were renowned for their debauchery: they were often drunk, involved in sexual scandals, and one actor was even fired because his behavior was so out of line. Of course, though many people spread these rumors, few substantiated them, and the Munchkin actors themselves even said much of the bad press was borne of discrimination against little people. In reality, many of the Munchkins were paid less than Terry The Terrier, the dog that played Dorothy’s canine sidekick, Toto.

Despite all this, the Wizard of Oz Munchkins were eventually recognized for the critical part they played in making this enduring movie. Over half a century later, the group was granted its star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (Yes, it took that long…) And the discrimination the Wizard of Oz Munchkins faced on and offset also led to the formation of the advocacy group Little People of America.
