Building A House Start To Finish | Episode 9: Stone Work and Loft Walls

Learn more about Evolve Stone at: https://evolvestone.com/nailed-it/

This is the 9th episode in a new series following the construction of a small, but very stylish, vacation home for one of our clients step by step. We are calling it The Modern Mountain Getaway, and it features vaulted ceilings, a huge wall of windows, and lots of outdoor space for the owners zen garden! In this series, we will highlight building techniques, building codes, order of operations, cost, building materials and tools used, and also even talk about the problems we run into during the build! This is going to be good fun.. And the best part is that YOU can rent this home for your own mountain getaway when it is complete!!

In Episode 9 we finish the last bit of framing, including the wall connecting the first and second floor roofs and the small roof over the master bathtub. For this section we "stick frame" instead of using engineered trusses. There is charts in the code book and on the American Wood Council web site (or app called SpanCalc) that detail allowable spans for different type materials. We also install the first bit of finish material on this project, the stonework around the perimeter. This stone, which is about 24" in height, works to "ground" the house visually and adds a nice variation in materials to the exterior of the home. We are using a manufactured stone called Evolve Stone, that makes this process much faster and easier than conventional stonework, and we show that process. Finally, in this episode we meet the homeowner, Tina, and walk through the house to lay out locations for light switches, receptacles, light fixtures, and coax. Many home plans include all of this information, but i prefer to look at the framing to find the best solution for switch and light placement. Doing this step "in person" also allows me to see the amount of natural light that a certain room will get, and this helps to decide how much lighting to add.

And as always, we include footage of the Perkins crew enjoying life here in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. There is tons of great information about how (and why) we are doing these processes the way we are. These videos paint a very real picture of what it is like to on the job with our crew for the day!

We are building this home on a budget of course, so we will also be discussing how we choose materials (and designed the house) with the budget in mind! This is a huge part of any build, and one that I think is overlooked in many YouTube videos.
