🔗 Mastering Power Systems – Part 2 | Kerala PSC EEE Exam | Ferranti, Skin Effect, Insulators, Corona + PYQs ⚡
Are you preparing for Kerala PSC exams like AE, SE, Draftsman, or Foreman in Electrical & Electronics Engineering? This video dives deep into key high-voltage transmission concepts—from Ferranti Effect to Corona Loss—backed with Previous Year Questions (PYQs) to sharpen your exam skills.
🔍 What You’ll Learn in This Video:
✅ Ferranti Effect
• Receiving end voltage greater than Sending end voltage under light or no load
• Prominent in long lines (greater than150 km)
• Caused by line charging current due to capacitance
• Control: Shunt reactors, Static VAR Compensators (SVC), line design
✅ Skin Effect
• AC current tends to flow near the surface of the conductor
• Leads to increased resistance and power loss
• Influenced by frequency, diameter, permeability, and conductivity
• Minimization: Use stranded or hollow conductors, low-permeability materials
✅ Insulators in Transmission Lines
• Purpose: Electrically isolate conductors from tower structures
• Types and Uses:
Pin Type – up to 33 kV
Suspension – above 33 kV
Strain – dead ends or angle towers
Shackle – low voltage
Post – substations/high-voltage equipment
✅ String Efficiency
• Issue: Unequal voltage distribution across insulator discs
• Improvement: Grading insulators, capacitor grading, static shielding
✅ Corona Effect
• Ionization of air around high-voltage conductors
• Indications: Bluish glow, hissing noise, ozone smell
• Disruptive Voltage : Start of ionization
• Visual Voltage : Start of glow/sound
• Pros: Surge protection, visual indicator
• Cons: Power loss, interference, conductor corrosion
• Control: Smooth/thicker conductors, increased spacing
✅ Kerala PSC Previous Year Questions (PYQs)
• MCQs based on Ferranti Effect, Skin Effect, Insulator Types, String Efficiency, and Corona Control
• Frequently asked definitions, formulas, and application-based questions
📖 This video will help you confidently tackle theory and MCQs from the Transmission Line section of the Kerala PSC EEE syllabus.
