Russian shells destroy warehouse near Kyiv, Ukraine

A BLAST caused by Russian shelling on Thursday (March 24) morning destroyed a warehouse in the town of Vasylkiv near Kyiv.

Thick smoke could be seen rising from the smouldering debris of the 4000 square metres (4373 square metres) production facility as firefighters reached the warehouse at 0505 local time and worked until 1440, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Posting to social media, the State Emergency Services said 24 firefighters were sent to the warehouse, adding that victims of the shelling have not yet been formally identified.

In a month of fighting, Ukraine has fended off what many Western military analysts had anticipated would be a quick Russian victory.

So far Russia has failed to capture a single major city. Its armoured columns have barely moved in weeks and are stalled at the gates of the capital Kyiv while besieging cities in the east. They have taken heavy casualties and are running low on supplies.
