Ancient Rome had over a million people — and a serious trash problem. From Romans throwing garbage out of windows to legal protections for people hit by falling waste, the Eternal City's sanitation challenges were very real. But Rome also had surprisingly sophisticated solutions: stercorarii to remove manure, redemptores to clear street waste, the legendary Cloaca Maxima sewer system, metal recycling, pottery repurposed as concrete filler, and Monte Testaccio — a hill made almost entirely of smashed olive oil amphorae.

Was Ancient Rome clean? No. But was it surprisingly modern in how it handled waste? Kind of, yeah.
