How to Create an Automatic Table of Contents in Pages

Want to create an automatic table of contents in Pages in just a few seconds?
In this video, I’ll show you the easiest way to do it!

✅ STEP 1: Structure your document
To generate a table of contents, your document needs properly formatted headings. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Select a title or important section.
2️⃣ Go to the right sidebar and choose Text Style – Title or Heading.
3️⃣ Repeat the process for all titles and subtitles.

✅ STEP 2: Insert the automatic table of contents
Now let’s insert the TOC:

1️⃣ Place the cursor where you want the table of contents to appear.
2️⃣ Go to Insert - Table of Contents - Document.
3️⃣ Pages will automatically generate the TOC based on the headings used.

✅ STEP 3: Customize the table of contents
You can personalize the TOC by adjusting:

1️⃣ Font and text size from the sidebar.
2️⃣ Visible heading levels (you can show only main titles or include subtitles too).
3️⃣ Alignment and spacing for a cleaner look.

✅ STEP 4: Update the table of contents automatically
If you add or modify headings in the document, you can easily update the TOC:

1️⃣ Click on the table of contents.
2️⃣ Press the Update button to reflect the changes.
