ACEI/ARBS With COVID-19: Hurtful Or Helpful? Mechanism, Systematic Review, And Telmisartan Therapy!

In this video we will be discussing Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEI) like Lisinopril (Zestril) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBS) like Losartan (Cozaar) and COVID-19. There has been a lot of discussion on whether these medications are harmful or helpful given that they increase ACE2 levels, of which the virus uses to infect human cells, but also decrease harmful signaling mediators that may contribute to inflammation and lung damage. We will dive into these mechanisms explaining what exactly this discussion is all about. We will then talk about a large systematic review looking at thousands of patients with COVID who took ACEI or ARBS. They found a decreased mortality in those taking these medications! Lastly, we will discuss a study that treated patients with an ARB, called Telmisartan, and explored laboratory and clinical outcomes. Check out the video for all the details!
