Trump Threatens To Veto Any Legislation That Takes Away His Tariff Powers
Seven Republicans in the Senate have co-sponsored legislation that would prevent the President, in this case Trump, from enacting tariffs without approval from Congress. Companion legislation has been introduced in the House by Republican Representative Don Bacon, but Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson is not a fan of this move. But all of this may be moot, as Trump has already made it clear that he’ll veto any legislation that attempts to curtail his power. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains what’s happening.

Right now in the Senate, there is legislation that was co-sponsored by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley. That would of course, basically almost completely curtail the President of the United States, in this case, Donald Trump's ability to enact tariffs without congressional approval. Now, after Chuck Grassley, and of course you had Maria Cantwell, a Democrat co-sponsor, the legislation you have now had six other Republicans sign onto it. So total of seven Republicans, which is more than enough if you have Democrats in unison to pass the legislation in the Senate. But credit where credit is due. In addition to Chuck Grassley. The other six Republicans are Mitch McConnell, weird, Jerry Moran, Todd Young, Tom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins. The other democratic co-sponsors, in addition to Cantwell are Amy Klobuchar, Mark Warner, Michael Bennett, Peter Welch, Chris, and Richard Blumenthal. Over in the House of Representatives, Don Bacon, Republican, has introduced companion legislation so that we can get it passed in both chambers and stop Donald Trump's horrific trade war.
There are several problems, however, because even though the legislation was introduced by a Republican in the House, house Speaker Mike Johnson, also Republican has told us repeatedly, we just have to trust Donald Trump. He knows what he's doing. He's a smart guy. So the Speaker of the House has already indicated we're not gonna pass this legislation. That's a bummer, right? But let's assume for a minute that you know, Republican Senator Ted Cruz has predicted a political bloodbath for Republicans in 2026. If this trend continues, let's assume that Mike Johnson eventually sees the writing on the wall. He's already seen the angry backlash for Republicans at town halls across the country. He knows the public's, and if the economy continues to get worse, which all signs indicate it will, Mike Johnson may have no choice but to allow this legislation to move forward. And more and more Republicans could in fact end up supporting it and passing it. Then boom, we got the house done, we got the Senate done. Ha, the legislation then, ah, crap goes to Donald Trump, who would have to sign it. Trump would have to sign off on legislation that literally takes away his own power. And yeah, he's gonna veto it. And that's not just an assumption. Um, the White House announced this week that yeah, he'll veto that in a heartbeat. It's not gonna happen.
But what if, what if we have the numbers to override the presidential veto?
Okay, now you're talking, now you're cooking here. Unfortunately, you have to have two thirds of both the House and the Senate in order to override a presidential veto. And even though we currently have seven Republicans that have signed onto this legislation, that's still may not be enough. If that's all we have in the Senate, it's not gonna happen. Not to mention over in the House, 435 members, two thirds would be 290. So you would have to get what, 75 Republicans give or take one or two to support stripping Donald Trump of power, eh, ugh. Suddenly that math becomes a little more difficult, doesn't it? Not to mention the fact that if they did have the numbers, and if they did do this, which would be great, I hope they do. Um, Trump's gonna kill you politically, right? He's, he's not gonna physically do it, I hope.
Um, honestly, I'm not gonna put anything past the guy. You know, he is got the Supreme Court immunity literally arguing. He could, you know, shoot his political enemy. So, you know, watch your back if you vote against him on this. But, um, what's he gonna do to these Republicans?
